Stinky the Snail is the first pet players will ever unlock. He is a green snail with a brown shell that roams around the bottom of the tank. He always moves in the direction of the nearest coin which he will collect.

Behavior[]

Stinky roams around the bottom of the tank, collecting objects of monetary value like coins and diamonds. Even if money has touched the ground, he will aim for any money above him first. He is ideal in a player's Virtual Tank because he is one of only two pets that can collect money in screensaver mode, the other pet being Clyde.

When threatened by an alien attack, Stinky ceases to collect money and hides in his shell, giving Clyde an advantage over Stinky.

In Tank 2, both Stinky and Clyde will collect stars from star guppies until a starcatcher is introduced to the tank. After that, neither pet will collect stars even if all of the starcatchers die out or are eaten by aliens. In Virtual Tank mode, they will continue collecting stars even if starcatchers are added. Neither Stinky nor Clyde will collect bombs, beetles, or snot.

If Stinky is in a tank with nimbus, he will turn red with anger if he spends over 20 seconds total chasing money without picking up any. This is purely comical and has no effect on his performance. He will revert to his regular color after finally collecting something or hiding from an alien attack.

In the Virtual Tank, Stinky will fall asleep after three minutes of inactivity, as a way to prevent players from passively collecting shells without using the screensaver mode.

Story[]

THE STORY OF
STINKY THE SNAIL
STINKY knew from an early age that he was different from the other
snails. He had the fever. The money fever. He was all about
collecting money. But what does STINKY need with all that money?
STINKY answers, "It impresses the ladies."

Trivia[]

  • Stinky has made several appearance in other games after the release of Insaniquarium.
    • Stinky's first guest appearance was in Plants Vs. Zombies, another game by PopCap Games, where he continues his role of collecting money, doing it in the player's Zen Garden.
      • Stinky also retains his habit of falling asleep after a few minutes when the game is left idle. However, Stinky can be fed chocolate to keep him awake longer.
      • Despite Plants Vs. Zombies having a minigame based on insaniquarium, Stinky does not appear in it.
    • Stinky appears as a hat for the Peashooter in Plants Vs. Zombies Garden Warfare, Garden Warfare 2, and Battle for Neighborville.
      • Stinky is depicted with visible eyes in the Garden Warfare games, and he was heavily redesigned for Battle for Neighborville.
    • Stinky's shell appears as the Snail DNA in Octogeddon, a game made by All Yes Good, where it functions as a helmet that blocks one hit.
      • This makes Octogeddon the first game not produced and published by PopCap Games where Stinky makes an appearance. Notably, despite being under a different company, game was still designed by George Fan, who was the lead designer of Insaniquarium and Plants Vs. Zombies.
  • Stinky is one of two pets whose description as "male" is inaccurate to the pet's species, with the other being Gumbo. In Stinky's case, snails are hermaphrodites, being both male and female simultaneously.
  • Stinky the Snail appears on the loading screen when starting the game, where he fills in the progress bar as he moves.
  • For some reason, Stinky does not hide in his shell when Cyrax is attacking during the final boss fight.
    • Other aliens spawning during the fight will still make Stinky hide like normal, though. It's only the Minisylvesters and Cyrax that Stinky won't hide from.
